The Women in Data Science Croatia (WiDS) initiative aims to inspire and educate data scientists worldwide, regardless of gender, and support women in the field. The 2nd Conference currently being held in Osijek, the so called Croatian silicon valley, is again featuring leaders in the field talking about their work, and their journeys.
There, two of our experts in data science Nataša Benčić, Senior Product Expert, and Maja Šarić, Product Expert, are talking about the trendy and exciting topic of Machine Learning. The focus is on explaining how it applies to analysing big data in our company with the aim of detecting fraud and decreasing the false positive rates.
The event started this morning, and here are Nataša and Maja on the Conference:
About the whole idea of the Conference and her first participation, Maja Šarić said:
I look on the participation on WiDS Croatia Conference as a great opportunity for a successful presentation of our Company and for ourselves. The idea is to empower women already in the field and recognizing their accomplishments. It is a great chance for us to get inspired, to improve our work and thus beginning new projects. It is also extremely interesting to hear about new topics and expand our knowledge and it is very important to see how much women contribute to data science
Maja also emphasized how this conference provides an opportunity to hear about the latest data science research in different fields, learn how other companies are leveraging data science for success, and connect with potential mentors, collaborators, and others in the field. She said that she always learns from both presenters and other attendees – either a new perspective on something she’s struggling with or a new idea about how to tackle different challenges.
Nataša participated on the first WiDS Croatia conference and being on the second conference she said:
The Data science conferences are always the best place to hear news about very exciting things happening in the field. Most of the times, wide set of industries is covered, giving insights and ideas where to focus our efforts in product development. Beside all of that, WiDS gives an opportunity to emphasize the contribution of women to data science.
Fraud prevention is one of the most crucial issues when it comes to payments. Our company uses various methods of fraud prevention and detection, of which the newest one is the use of machine learning After the first phase of collaboration with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, as we defined the most appropriate algorithm for our data – Random forest, we are continuing to the other phases of testing and implementing the ML model.
